Thank you Theta Kappa, Sigma Nu, and all Veterans!

Alumni, Brothers, Members, & Friends...

Today we take the time to thank our veterans for the sacrifices they have made and to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Originally, November 11, observed in the United States in honor of veterans of the armed services and in commemoration of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. In 1954 it was renamed from Armistice Day and given the added significance of honoring all veterans. Because of its original meaning, Veterans Day coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.

If you are a veteran, know of a brother who was a veteran, or wish to honor a particular veteran, please send us a note with your name, branch and years of service, so we can add you or that person to our “Wall of Honor for Veterans”. The wall and links to add veterans are at: http://sigmanugsu.celect.org/theta-kappa-wall.

In addition to Veterans Day, November 11th has a special meaning for Theta Kappa of Sigma Nu Fraternity as on this day in 1989 we dedicated our Chapter House at 103 Olympic Boulevard, so today we celebrate 22nd anniversary of the dedication of our chapter home. In just 6 days, we will also celebrate the founding of our Chapter on November 17, 1967 by 18 young men. See the photo at:
http://sigmanugsu.celect.org/our-founding.

Passing of Melvin (Stan) Puckett, ThK 261

It is with regret that I have some sad news to announce today near the eve of the anniversary of our chapter’s founding. Stan Puckett, ThK 261, passed away and joined Chapter Eternal on Thu., Nov. 3rd, in Macon, GA. Stan was initiated as an alumnus in 1986 and was one of the early members of the colony, but was not available for the charter initiation in 1970, so he was initiated along with 13 other alumni on November 14, 1986. Stan had been suffering from an extended illness when he passed away.

A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, November 9th in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will be private. The family will meet friends from 2 p.m. to service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Stan was a longtime Probation Officer with the Georgia Department of Corrections and had retired in Macon, GA. He is survived by his family whom he adored, his wife of thirty-eight years, Susan H. Puckett of Macon and numerous family members. He was preceded in death by his son Christopher Stan Puckett.

Visit www.maconmemorial.com to express condolences. For more information and his obituary published in the Macon Telegraph, please go to: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/macon/obituary.aspx?n=melvin-stanley-puckett-stan&pid=154473022&fhid=6046.

Please join me in expressing the condolences of the alumni chapter to Stan’s family, friends, and brothers.

Thank you / Hope you got home safely / Homecoming/ASC Committee / Updates / Call for Digital Pictures, Video, etc.

Thank you for attending Homecoming 2011! We would like to publish some information, news, and requests right away, so here it goes:

Despite the odds and marginal football, we had a great weekend. We hope that everyone had fun and got home safely – thank you for attending and if you did not, we hope you will mark your calendar for next year, which we are being told will be the weekend of Nov. 2-4, 2012 vs. Appalachian. It will be decided very soon and we will let you know but our bets are on November 3rd.

A couple of items for everyone:
1) At the suggestion of brother Larry Sands, ThK 325, and some others, we have created the Alumni Social Committee (ASC) to plan homecoming and other alumni social events under the auspices of the alumni chapter. Brother Greg Houlihan, ThK 334, made the presentation as Larry was running a half marathon (he survived). The intent is to: 1) to have completely satisfied alumni/chapter members/ guests at the lowest total delivered cost with value added activities and with emphasis on risk reduction, 2) Increase attendance and participation with a high quality event. Wilkes Evans, ThK 607, was elected chairman, Larry volunteered to represent the AAB, and Greg Houlihan volunteered to represent the 80’s, but there is plenty of room for more and so we are looking for volunteers. To get more information or to volunteer, please fill out the form at http://sigmanugsu.celect.org/hc-asc-volunteer on the website.
2) If you have digital pictures or videos from Homecoming or other events, please upload those to http://dropbox.yousendit.com/WilliamGeddy614872 or go to: http://sigmanugsu.celect.org/photos. Please ensure they are free of viruses and it is easier if you zip them up first.
3) LEAD – as discussed at the Homecoming Alumni Chapter meeting, we need your assistance with LEAD, so we are looking for volunteers to facilitate LEAD sessions. Brother Larry Sands, ThK 325, is the AAB LEAD Advisor, so he can answer your questions or you can review the website and volunteer by filling out a form at: http://sigmanugsu.celect.org/help-with-lead.
4) Again thank you to all attended and to those who thoughts we were in – we got several notes. A special thanks to Jeff Miller, Alumni Commander (ThK 337), Robert Williams, Alumni Lt. Commander (ThK 258), Greg Houlihan Alumni Recorder (ThK 334), Larry Sands, AAB Vice Chairman (ThK 325), Wilkes Evans, the New ASC Chairman (ThK 607), and to the many others who pitched in this year. We will be sending out and posting on the website the Alumni Chapter Meeting minutes and the Homecoming Financial Report in the next few weeks. If you would like to contribute or pay your homecoming fee/alumni dues, please go to: http://sigmanugsu.celect.org/homecoming-payment.

Look for announcements in the near future from the New Alumni Social Committee (ASC) and a potentially a survey on homecoming and alumni social events to get your feedback and suggestions.

If you have thoughts or ideas they are welcome – these are some random thoughts to keep you informed. Please visit and register at website (www.sigmanugsu.com) and join the Alumni Chapter Facebook site (http://www.facebook.com/groups/sigmanugsu/).

We look forward to hearing from you!

The Theta Kappa Alumni Chapter, Officers, and the New Alumni Social Committee

Alumni, Brothers, and Friends…

Homecoming is upon us – just a few days away. The date is Nov. 3-6 with the matchup of the GSU Eagles against the Citadel. The Homecoming Fee Payment system is up and you can now pay your assessments and dues. The chapter will be managing the payments this year, will pay bills due, reimburse for expenditures, and pay the alumni chapter for any donations and dues paid to the alumni chapter.

The chapter is collecting payment this year, so please pay your Homecoming 2011 Fees or Dues at the Theta Kappa website as soon as possible. You will be transferred to the Omega Financials website for payment information – this is the system the collegiate chapter uses to collect dues, payments, etc. The link to the payment form is: http://sigmanugsu.celect.org/homecoming-payment.

For last minute updates check back here or visit our Facebook Page at: http://www.facebook.com/groups/sigmanugsu/.

If you do not pay in advance you will likely need to pay by check or cash as we will not likely have a credit card payment machine available.

If you have not RSVP’d yet, please RSVP at Homecoming at: http://sigmanugsu.celect.org/homecoming-rsvp. There is an explanation of Homecoming Fees and Alumni Dues as well as the Income & Expenditures for 2010.

One other note – we will begin “Our History Project” this year capturing video, audio, and written history and memories of Theta Kappa. Please bring your memories, photos (digitized if possible), videos, and yourself – we will have HD Video Recording Capability. We will focus this year on older alumni and key officers trying to interview as many as possible during the weekend. For more information, please go to: http://sigmanugsu.celect.org/history-project.

Happy Thanksgiving / Playoffs / Homecoming / Anniversary / Our History / Updates & Vision

This started as a recap of Homecoming 2010 but morphed into a message on our anniversary, crossed over to talk about our history, then playoffs got included, and then about our vision for the future – you get the point there is a lot happening! And it is all good.

Thanks & Thanksgiving…
First a special Happy and Safe Thanksgiving Holiday wish to all of you and your families – our families. At this special time of the year we have a lot to be thankful for – all of us regardless of current circumstance. As I read an article while getting a haircut yesterday – it was a review of TNT’s new “Glory Days”, but the message was about college shows don’t succeed in the USA because only 25% of the population can identify with it because that is all that attends college – well we are all in that 25%. We have all done our taxes and got to the end where it tells you are at the top 10%, 5%, or some 1% of the income in the US. We are fortunate and have much to be thankful for – we live in the US and not somewhere else.

A special thanks to all of our Sigma Nu brothers and Theta Kappa alumni serving (and served) in the Armed Forces, really to anyone in the armed forces, both in the USA and abroad – keep safe!

GSU Eagles – One more time…
Playoffs – we are back and the stands are shouting “one more time” – wherever we end up at the end of the season – it is official – the GSU Eagles are back! From a stellar Homecoming and phenomenal victory against Appalachian State (#1 seed in Playoffs) in overtime finishing the season with 3 consecutive victories, GSU made it to the playoffs on the last day. It will be fun and it will be a great tee up for next year. Regardless if you are at Georgia Tech at Georgia, Auburn at Alabama, Florida at Florida State, at Paulson stadium, at home, or somewhere else – we know where all of your hearts will be. GO EAGLES!

Tickets are available at GSU and friends have a couple extras on the 50 yard line, so click here and we will tell you if some are left or if we have enough requests to get a small block for Sigma Nus, but you know who to call to see if he has any more tickets.

Homecoming 2010 / Homecoming 2011 – enough said…
We had a great time and we missed many of you, but save the date for 2011 – it is Nov. 3-6, 2011! If you missed it or if you haven’t viewed them – check out our photos. This coming year will be the 25th anniversary of the “Alumni Initiation of 1986”, the 14 charter members who were unable to make it the chartering. This is one event which really jumpstarted our alumni program and drive for a house. There will be a very big celebration and we want everyone to be there. We have rooms at 3 different hotels to accommodate the crowd! To see some of the fun this year you can see the slideshows, view photos, download, mark, and comment on the fun at www.sigmanugsu.com/homecoming-2010, but you will likely need to login.

An important Anniversary – November 17th…
We just celebrated our 43rd anniversary of the founding of “Nu Sigma”, the start of our colonization process with Sigma Nu, and the split from the local APO service fraternity. Many thanks to those founders who got our colony off the ground back on November 17, 1967. Speaking of our founding we are now working on a history project, so read on.

History, our history, – History 041 the project…
2011 is a big year for us as I noted above, but we will make it even bigger with some other news with some surprises to come as well. The big news is during this year, we will start to write and record (video) the Theta Kappa history. We will be asking for everyone’s help, but we will be asking each commander & officer team to step up and help write a history of their term. We want something from everyone – we want written history, newspaper clipping, yearbook stuff, GSU news, photos, videos, audio clip, rush slideshows, everything for our archive. We will video record key alumni for posterity, so jump into this project and help – you can nominate someone to be captured, but most of all – what can you do?

Today we celebrate our founding. On November 17, 1967, our founders gathered to found “Nu Sigma” and begin the petitioning process to become a Theta Kappa Colony. Led by members of APO Service Fraternity (local) these gentlemen gathered to start what is now the Theta Kappa Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity at Georgia Southern. We toast you efforts and the entire chapter!

Raise a glass tonight in celebration to our founding and our brotherhood!

Another Great Homecoming Success! / If you have not settled you Homecoming Account – there is still time to do so!

Alumni, Brothers, Friends, and Guests…

Thank you to those of you who attended homecoming this year – it was a great event and a great football victory! I hope you all had a great time and got home to rest after a long weekend.

Several alumni asked to pay their fees after the weekend or were not able to pay while they were in Statesboro, so we are providing this reminder and way to pay for Homecoming online. Please go to our website at www.SigmaNuGSU.com/pay-your-bill to find several simplified on-line methods to pay or to download, fill out, and submit a payment form. Please do so ASAP as we need reconcile our accounts. The weekend event cost about $11,000 for everything to put on including golf, tickets, meals, security, tents/tables/chairs, bands, and more – some of this the chapter budgets for and remainder is paid for through the Homecoming fees. For a complete accounting of the weekend you can look at Homecoming Budget & Expenditure Sheet which is on the above page at our website.

The basic fees were:
$75.00/couple for all alumni
$50.00/golfer for all golfers
$25.00/ticket for Football Tickets
$20.00/ea for the Steak Dinner on Friday night

With this information and the attached sheet, which can also be downloaded from the website as well, you can calculate and submit your fees to the Alumni Chapter. Since we are an Honor Fraternity, we leave it at that. Individual emails have been sent out if we had questions or you asked us to send you a bill after the weekend.

For those of you that were unable to attend Homecoming, we invite you to join in the success by paying Theta Kappa Alumni Dues, which are optional. Alumni Dues do not go towards the payment of Homecoming, as that is slef-funded, but rather to the sustainment of the Alumni Chapter and the House Fund.

A couple of reminders:
>>Homecoming 2011 is Nov. 3-6, so mark your calendars now!
>>November 17th is the anniversary of the spiritual founding of the colony and chapter, so raise a glass!
>>May 21, 2011 we will be having our 2nd Annual Spring Fling Golf Event at Chateau Elan, so plan for it!

In the coming days we will have some exciting news we wish to share with you, but until then we wish you the best!

Homecoming payment form is at: https://sigmanugsu.celect.org/uploads/files/0015/2004/homecoming_payment_form.pdf

As many of you already know, I am in a runoff election that will be held on November 30. I am in the process of raising funds for the home stretch. For the brothers that haven't had a chance to contribute, I am asking a donation of $10 if you can.”

Jim McBrayer (Theta Kappa #5)

Kent Hampshire awarded Valorous Service Medal

Alumnus Kent Hampshire, ThK 303, was recently awarded the Westminster Police Department's Valorous Service Medal, the highest honor at the department, for his efforts to apprehend two bank robbery suspects who were fleeing from the scene under heavy gunfire eventually leading to the death of both suspects.

Kent is a Detective with the Westminster Police Department in Westminster, CO. On November 19th, 2009 he was on his way back from the prosecutor's office when he responded to a radio of a bank robbery that had just occurred. He was in an unmarked car in civilian clothes with no ballistic protection. He spotted a car matching the description of the bank robber's getaway car and inconjunction with a patrol car attempted to facilitate a traffic stop. The vehicle fled through a busy strip mall parking lot and the occupants made the desperate decision to shoot out their back window at the other officer (Sgt Martinez) and Kent.

Martinez and Hampshire began pursuing the fleeing robbers chasing them down a major surface street in Westminster. During the pursuit the suspects would slow down to fire at Sgt. Martinez and Kent. Responding patrol units were also fired upon.

After another unit rammed the fleeing suspects car, the suspects decided to "shoot it out" and the officers had to do something that noone wants to do...shoot a suspect. The suspects, a male and female common law married couple, both died from gunshot wounds. Further investigation found that they had commented on "doing a Bonnie and Clyde" type of robbery and obviously were willing to kill responding police officers. Two officers were wounded.

The incident warranted local headlines and even made national news. All of the officers were awarded medals for their courage, but Kent was awarded the Valorous Service Medal...the highest honor at the department...for his efforts.

Kent's ccomment was "It was very evident to me that God was watching over me that day and I was able to serve Him in an honorable way. Sigma Nu's Creed...To Believe in the Life of Love, To Walk in the Way of Honor, To Serve in the Light of Truth...definitely directed my actions that day."

Alvin was the longest tenured COE Commander in that district since the Hurricane Katrina disaster and was faced with the mission of restoring public confidence in the district and providing "100 year level" protection of the area. During Alvin's time with the chapter he served as the Pledge Marshal and Lt. Commander. He is being reassigned to the Pentagon after this ardous and important tour.

The cermony was attended by fellow alumnus Jim Mullis, ThK 195, our 18th Commander. Jim submitted this information and is sending photos/article for inclusion on the site as well as for the Delta. Brother Mullis attened both the reception the night before as well as the cermony the next day, said "He was recognized and roasted by the whole state. He evidently made a huge difference as judged by the gifts, attendance and awards". We look forward to seeing both Irv and Jim as well as their spouses at Homecoming 2010.
Jeff Dudley - Sigma Nu Filmmaker

Jeff Dudley has taken on a new role with the chapter - he has become the official - Sigma Nu Filmmaker. First Jeff converted the video of our House Dedication on Nov. 11, 1989 to digital format for the website and to preserve the footage then he was enlisted to film Regent Joe Gilman's 64th Grand Chapter address to the Fraternity. Afterwards Jeff had Joe record his address to the Theta Kappa Chapter and alumni at the re-chartering ceremony. Joe gave a powerful address and is worth watching.

Jeff plans to expand his filmmaking for the chapter again as a surprise event. In his spare time, Jeff is the General Manager of WMAZ-TV in Macon, a member of the Gannett family.

3 Little Men visit West Georgia - sounds like a nursery rhyme, but it is not

The Little family men: Lee (Dad), David (past Commander), and Drew Little (Rush Chairman) all went to West Georgia (Carrollton) for a weekend and spent time working with Theta Pi alumni and members on their house. It was a big work day for the chapter and they had a lot of people chip in to help. New Regent Robert Durham came by to lend support; turns out Lee Little and Robert Durham attended High School together.

Lee is a Theta Pi member (Th Pi 110) and a West Georgia graduate - David and Drew of course are members of Theta Kappa and were both legacies. David graduated from GSU in the Spring, is looking for opportunities, and has couple out there. Drew returns in August as the Rush Chairman for Fall Rush.

5 initiate 29 - it was a 1st all the way around

Five past commanders returned to GSU on Sat., Feb. 27th to be the ritual team for the re-installation, re-chartering, and initiation of the Theta Kappa Chapter. The Chapter had the option of requesting a ritual team from another school or reaching back to the past and finding 5 worthy commanders or alumni to fill the roles.

It was historic as it was the first time serving a initiation in each of the roles for each Commander. Robert, our founder and first commander, graduated before the chartering in 1970, so was not initiated until 1986 by then Commander, Bill Geddy, ThK 219. This was Robert's first initiation as commander, but he did a great job as did the entire team. The commanders were (serving in the role as): Sentinel: David L. Little - ThK 671 (2008-2009), Marshal: Jimmie D. Walker, Jr. - ThK 150 (1980-1982), Commander: Robert G. Williams - ThK 258 (1967-1969), Lt. Commander: John B. Austin - ThK 120 (1977-1978), and Chaplain: William B. Geddy - ThK 219 (1985-1988).

The ceremony was “choreographed” by Chris Healey, staff member and the Director of Fraternal Expansion and the entire weekend was presided over by Regent Joe Gilman. Also Educational Field Consultant Gabe Ford and over 50 alumni participated in the weekend of activities.

You can see a historic photo at: http://sigmanugsu.celect.org/initiation-commanders, numerous other photos, and find out more about the ceremony throughout the site.
